What is Google rewarding when a competitor outranks you?
Relevance, evidence and reputation, roughly in that order. Relevance is whether a page on their site answers the search better than any page on yours. Evidence is what that page carries: projects, photographs, detail, reviews, the signs of a real business doing real work. Reputation is what the rest of the web says about them, from the trade bodies and suppliers that link to them to the reviews on their Google profile.
None of those is a trick. They are the same things a buyer weighs up, which is why fixing them tends to improve enquiries before the rankings have finished moving.
Have they built a page for that search and you have not?
Check this first, because it explains more Bradford rankings than everything else put together. Search for the service and the town, open the competitor’s result and look at whether it is a page about that exact service in that area or simply their homepage. A dedicated page beats a general one nearly every time, because Google can see precisely what it is about.
Then count. If three rivals have purpose-built pages for a search and you have a paragraph on a services page, the gap is structural and no amount of fiddling with titles closes it. Write the page. Bond Brickwork sits at the top of Google for the commercial brickwork searches that matter, and the site has been built on that principle since 2018: a page per capability, each one specific, each one backed by named developments.
Are they showing more evidence than you?
Open both sites side by side and count the proof. Named projects with real photographs, case studies with a result in them, reviews with names attached, accreditations, the people. If their page has eight of those and yours has a stock photograph and a paragraph about quality, Google is drawing the same conclusion a buyer would.
Evidence is also the part Bradford construction and manufacturing firms are best placed to win, because the work photographs well and most competitors never bother to record it. A filmed job, like the drone footage of Jack Lunn’s development at Flower Meadows, gives a page something no competitor can copy.
Are they mentioned in more places than you?
Probably, and it matters more than most owners think. Google reads links and mentions from other sites as a measure of how established a business is: the trade association that lists you, the supplier who names you as an approved installer, the housebuilder’s site that credits its contractors, the local paper, the directories people genuinely use. A competitor with thirty of those and a business with three will rank differently even with identical pages.
The fix is slower and unglamorous. Ask for the mentions you have earned, get the profiles you are already in tidied up, and give people something worth linking to, which is usually a useful guide or a well-documented project.
Is your website slower or messier than theirs?
Speed, mobile layout and tidy indexing are the quiet part of the gap. A site that takes six seconds to load on a phone, has three addresses for the same page or leaves half its pages hidden from Google is carrying weight the competitor is not. Google’s own PageSpeed tool and Search Console show all of this for free, and a technical clean-up is often the cheapest movement you will get.
It is rarely the whole answer on its own. Fast and thin still loses to slower and thorough, so treat it as the foundation for the pages and the proof, and do it early.
What should a Bradford business do about it?
Pick the two or three searches that bring the work you want, check the five causes above against the competitor who holds each one, and close the gaps in order: the page, the proof, the profile, the mentions, the technical basics. Measure it in Search Console monthly. A business that does that steadily for six months tends to overtake the competitors who never got round to it, and the enquiries usually change before the positions do.
The same signals decide what AI search recommends, so a firm that closes these gaps is fixing its AI visibility at the same time. Bond Brickwork is recommended by AI search for the same reasons it ranks. That is the work Halizona does for the businesses on this page, and if you would like us to run the checks on your competitors, that is where we would start.
